Uncle Frank

Uncle Frank in some way or another, Alan Ball has always told us about family. He did it in the film that won him the Uncle Frank Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, American Beauty, and in the series with which he helped revolutionize modern television, Six Feet Under. Those were painful and somewhat twisted glimpses into the secrets a family can hide. In his new film, Uncle Frank – which he directs 13 years after he last held that position at Towelhead – he returns to talking about family but in a much more personal way.

The film is set in the early 70s and stars Paul Bettany (extraordinary and will surely be part of the conversation at the time of the awards) as a man who has lived something away from his own family. He is a college professor in New York City and from the beginning we understand that his relationship with his father is cold and distant. Perhaps the only one with whom he feels an affinity for him is his niece Beth, played by Sophia Lillis, from It (It) and the series Sharp Objects, with Amy Adams.
