True History of the Kelly Gang

True History of the Kelly Gang Justin Kurzel alerts us as soon as we begin this latest approach to the figure of Ned True History of the Kelly Gang Kelly, a sort of Robin Hood with Guevarian overtones that plays an important role in the construction of the collective imagination and the identity of Australia: Nothing of what we will see in this true story is true. And it hardly matters, because the reason for the film is not to discover who Kelly and his band were – as the biopics more to the use of Tony Richardson (1970) or Gregor Jordan (2003) did, the first with Mick Jagger, the second with Heath Ledger in the main role – but delve into one of Kurzel’s obsessions: the origin, social and intimate, of violence and its manifestation, forceful and aesthetic, on screen.

A constant that does not always solve satisfactorily – there is the failed ‘Assassin’s Creed’ (2016), in which he proposed a blockbuster reading of the same themes -, many times because of a slovenly narrative that does not live up to its achievements visuals. Because Kurzel is interested in immersing us in this portrait of toxic masculinity and maternity (dedicated George MacKay and Essie Davis) not through reason, but through madness. A hallucinatory, anguished and disturbing journey in a surprising punk key that progresses from the constant clash – desire and fear, life and death, image and text – and without possible dialogue. A film that remains, like death flashes, its flashes of sordid beauty and a single certainty: there is no future.
