The Souvenir

The Souvenir in one of the first scenes of ‘The Souvenir’, a couple looks at a painting by Jean-Honoré Fragonard. The Souvenir It is called, curiously, ‘The Souvenir’. In it, there is a young woman carving a message of love on a tree under the watchful eye of her dog and a halo of deep melancholy. “It seems sad,” says Julie (Honor Swinton Byrne, daughter of Tilda Swinton). “I think she seems determined,” replies Anthony (Tom Burke), who will eventually become her lover. The way they both observe the painting reveals several of the secrets hidden in this dazzling new film by Joanna Hogg: the game of mirrors, the representation of reality in art and of art in reality, the tragic essence of love in youth, the act of observing to find ourselves and how the perspective of the same image changes depending on who is looking at it. The perverse game between the real and its imitation, which here is made up of memories. Of ‘souvenirs’.

The North American filmmaker has only needed four feature films to become one of the most exciting cinematographic voices of the moment, and now she faces her most personal project to date. ‘The Souvenir’, winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the last edition of the Sundance Film Festival, is an autobiographical tale that focuses on a love relationship that Hogg had when she was just twenty years old and was still an aspiring filmmaker with many dreams and too much innocence. His own memory is the material from which the passions and tensions of this film are built, which achieves the perfect balance between the spontaneous and the precise, between the flow of life and an implacable staging locked in the same confusion as that of its very young protagonist. Or, rather, in her erratic memory, where, realistically, numerous ellipses and gaps abound.
