The Kindness of Strangers

The Kindness of Strangers the Danish Lone Scherfig has opened the 69th edition of the Berlinale with ‘The Kindness of Strangers’, an easy tear drama about the journey that a mother and her two children take to flee from an abusive family father. Despite the great cast that heads it, what could have been an empathetic reflection on the search for humanity in a place as apparently inhospitable as New York ends up falling into the most absolute incongruity and sentimentality.

What is it about? The film actually revolves around four plots that are found in New York City, although the central story is, of course, that of Clara (Zoe Kazan), a mother who decides to take her children (Jack Fulton and Finlay Wojtak-Hissong) to escape from Richard (Esben Smed), her half-psychopathic husband who also happens to be a policeman. To go unnoticed, Clara will have to sneak in and steal food, on different occasions, from a restaurant run by the pseudo-Russian Timofey (Bill Nighy) and by her manager Marc (Tahar Rahim). Marc’s only friend is his lawyer John Peter (Jay Baruchel), who drags him every week to a therapy group run by Alice (Andrea Riseborough), a nurse who also participates daily in the neighborhood soup kitchen and, coincidence of Life is a regular at Timofey and Marc’s restaurant. All of this without forgetting Jeff (Caleb Landry Jones), a mess with legs who, due to his enormous clumsiness, cannot keep a job for two days in a row and who ends up working there soup kitchen that Alice also happened to be.
