The Death & Life of John F. Donovan

The Death & Life of John F. Donovan January 1998. Xavier Dolan writes a letter to Leonardo DiCaprio to profess his admiration The Death & Life of John F. Donovan (he had seen his movie Titanic five times at the cinema in less than two weeks) in the hope that the new great promise of Hollywood will find time to respond to him. Unknowingly, the Canadian film prodigy was sowing the first seeds of what, two decades later, would be his first film in English. Toronto, a festival that has premiered all his films and has always pampered him, has hosted the world premiere of a production that has faced a hellish editing process. The version that will be seen in theaters lasts just over two hours. The first montage doubled in duration and had Jessica Chastain, now missing, among its cast.

Leaving aside the succession of rumors and problems in the production, the director of Mommy wanted to wink to the past by reading in front of a crowded theater in which there were more than 1,500 people awaiting the premiere that letter he wrote to his child idol. The Death and Life of John F. Donovan was born in response to the obsession of a boy from Quebec who, at eight years old, was looking for references on the screen that he did not have in real life.
