Mr. Jones

Mr. Jones what is it about? In 1933, the Welshman Gareth Jones (James Norton) is an ambitious journalist who is Mr. Jones gaining fame thanks to being the first foreigner to interview Hitler. Looking for a new story to tell, Jones decides to try interviewing Stalin to ask about the origin of the riches of the communist utopia. But, upon arriving in Moscow, his meeting with another journalist, Ada Brooks (Vanessa Kirby), will push him to undertake a much more dangerous investigation: to verify and denounce the constant rumors of a terrible famine that, it seems, is ending with million people in Ukraine. Escaping from the police forces, he will finally reach his destination, where he will have to survive, counting with all the rigor that his humanity allows him to use the enormous misery that the rural people live. Although there is no certainty that no one will believe him when he returns to England.

What’s up?. If Holland has a recurring theme, that is the horror engendered by dictatorial movements during the interwar period. In ‘Europe, Europe’ (1990), it was the terrible appeal of Nazism; in ‘In Darkness’ (2011), the daily struggle of Polish Jews occupied by the German regime. It was to be expected that, eight years later, the director would step back on familiar ground with all the awareness of being telling a story, at the same time as History. This point is important, since it seems that the entire staging of the film starts from the need to admit the leading role of the story of time (as a historical, not a chronological concept). Gareth Jones is a journalist and Holland tries to be too, a bit. Just as Gareth soon learns that there will always be a political agenda behind each “objective” news, the director tries to make visible her particular conception of the staging to be a little more honest with her H / story.
