Minamata

Minamata is a drama film that focuses on photographer W. Eugene Smith, who on his return to Japan decides to document the Minamata devastating effects of mercury poisoning on coastal communities. The most striking thing about the story itself is that it is based on the book of the same name, which was co-written by Eugene Smith, a royal photographer who worked for Life magazine, who was in charge of making suffering known to the world of the inhabitants of Minamata.

Minamata disease is a serious and permanent neurological disorder caused by the aforementioned poisoning. Symptoms include ataxia (incoordination of parts of the body), impaired sight and hearing, weakness, and in extreme cases paralysis and death. The outbreak began in the 1950s, and about 45 people died, and the animals showed similar symptoms. W. Eugene Smith’s photo story drew the world’s attention to this disease in the 1970s and it was discovered that the cause was a chemical company that disposed of heavy metals.
