What’s up? It is difficult to get off to a better start in the film industry than the Englishman Petter Cattaneo did. In 1991, when he was only 27 years old, he was nominated for an Oscar with the short film ‘Dear Rosie’. In 1997, his debut feature hit theaters with a contagious and unexpected success: ‘Full Monty’ became one of the greatest hits in the history of European cinema with a portrait of a working-class community devastated by the economic crisis and lack of of work. The film won over critics, voters of the awards associations and, above all, the general public. At the age of 33, Cattaneo received a nomination for the Hollywood Academy Awards for best director and got his social fable to defeat the all-powerful ‘Titanic’ at the BAFTAs in his country. His career had started in style, but what followed was a dose of reality as great as the one that the protagonists of the popular social comedy had to accept: for one night his life seemed like a dream from which he would have to wake up at the next morning to start over (almost) from scratch. In the 22 years that have passed since the ‘Full Monty’ boom, the filmmaker has only signed three films and a handful of television series without much success. Cattaneo and his innate ability to direct actors and to move miraculously naturally from comedy to drama weren’t enough if he didn’t have a good script in hand. In his two Oscar-nominated works he had imaged the librettos of two of England’s most prestigious screenwriters: Peter Morgan (‘The Crown’, ‘The Queen’) and Simon Beaufoy (‘Slumdog Millionaire’, ‘127 Hours’) . Without them by his side, the magic of his cinema disappeared.
