Mary Shelley

Mary Shelley is a little known figure to the general public. The writer is one of those cases in which the work engulfs Mary Shelley its creator, being almost forgotten, except for those who claim their work. The film at hand tries to bring the viewer closer to the figure of a woman much more important than what history has recognized. Not surprisingly, his best known work, not the only one, “Frankenstein or the modern Prometheus”, is a founding work of science fiction and one of the icons of popular culture thanks to the creation of James Whale for the cinema in the year 1931 and the immortal performance of Boris Karloff. Although the film strays from the novel, the novel put Frankenstein on the map. A name inevitably linked to the world of literature first, then to genre and finally to cinema; which owes creations prior to the Whale adaptation, such as those masterpieces of German expressionism that are “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” and “Metropolis”, with which it bears great similarities. Not forgetting how a contemporary author, Ridley Scott, has revered the work in both “Blade Runner” and the recent “Alien: Covenant.” And it is that one could say that Shelley was also the creator of that, if you will, subgenre of the “mad doctors”. With all these wickers, it was fair to make visible the figure of this author who with only eighteen years of age created a masterpiece of literature that still exists today.
