Leave No Trace

Leave No Trace filmmaker Debra Granik has built a career – not very prolific, but solid – focused on the other side of America.Leave No Trace One that is not made up of Wall Street entrepreneurs or Hollywood stars, but one that is less glamorous and represented in the cinema, in which multitudes of people live in utter misery on the outskirts of big cities. People who cannot be absorbed by a system that harms them and who make themselves victims of the wildest capitalism. The other North America is not so pretty, although, in Granik’s eyes, it is full of humanity.

‘Leave no trace’ partially recovers the thematic line of the documentary ‘Stray dog’ (2014), in which the filmmaker portrayed the lonely biker life of a Vietnam veteran. With her new film we return to those makeshift rural places where ex-military men and other renegades of consumer society join forces in search of a decent life. But first we will meet Will (Ben Foster), a man with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) as a result of his experience in war and who refuses to be swallowed up by the mechanisms of the State. Thus, for a decade he has been living in the middle of the forest with his daughter Tom (Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie), whom he has taught to hunt, obtain water, protect themselves from inclement weather and, above all, erase their tracks. Both have lived alone for a long time, but the unsociability of the father begins to detach from the desire of his almost teenage daughter to connect with the community. The decline of middle age and the flowering ‘coming of age’ of a young woman collide in the central conflict of the film.
