Hope Gap

Hope Gap there has always been a link connecting the creative universes of two essential playwrights on the British scene:Hope Gap Harold Pinter and William Nicholson. The cold, almost surgical, observation of the deterioration of love and relationships (or relationships in general) is common in both. As is also the presence of a third party, a witness to those landscapes with ruined figures. The Jamie from Back to Hope Gap stars in this stormy calm drama as the Leo in The Messenger (Joseph Losey, 1971), Pinter’s personal adaptation of the L. P. Hartley novel. Between the intermediary (a child in reality) between two lovers in Losey’s film to the adult son who mediates an unanswered and traumatic separation, there is hardly any difference; we could almost think of a projection in the future of the character. A mute and sorrowful testimony, unable to understand how and why his parents surely never loved each other. A bitter reflection in three voices, in off or in devastating dialogues, for a film as harsh and truthful as it is devoid of artifice.
