Eternal Beauty there are multiple stories of schizophrenia that have been brought to the screen in recent years. Eternal Beauty Shine (1996, Scott Hicks), Memento (2000, Christopher Nolan), Spider (2002, David Cronenberg), Shutter Island (2010, Martin Scorsese), The Good Side of Things (2012, David O. Russell) … even Joker (2019, Todd Phillips). All of them are films in which the mental state of their protagonists is reflected in the schizoid progression of the story, and that in some way use the distorted perceptions of their creatures as elements of a thriller or to load the ink in the drama. There are not so many films, however, that, for their purpose, have sought to express the fractures of the psyche with the tools of the language and grammar of cinema, beyond the structure of the script. The Oscar-winning A Wonderful Mind (2001, Ron Howard), now a forgotten film, had no other merit than to reveal the schizophrenia of the mathematician John Nash (Russel Crowe) with a narrative trick of suspicious honesty with the viewer. Fortunately, this is not the case with the commendable Eternal Beauty, a debut film starring Sally Hawkins that now comes to us through various streaming platforms: Prime Video, Rakuten, Google Play, etc.

The film revolves around Jane (Hawkins) and her family, until Mike (David Thwelis) crosses his path, another lost soul in search of a way to advance day by day without the ground disappearing under his feet or the sky falls on his head, already seriously injured. Jane suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and in the first minutes of the film we see how, through family videos, she entered into crisis the day she was abandoned at the altar to get married. Since then, her mind has been a merry-go-round of chaos and magic, of eccentricity and madness, where the extremely tragic coexists with the comic without a solution of continuity.
