Cold War

Cold War few directors like David Lean embody the ability to direct films where the intimate intersects with the epic of Cold War the historical dimension in which the characters move. A good example of this is ‘Doctor Zhivago’ (1965), his adaptation of the novel by Borís Pasternak about the romance between the doctor of the title played by Omar Sharif and Lara, played by Julie Christie, who is frustrated by events in Russia in the first half of the 20th century.

It is inevitable to think of David Lean’s film before ‘Cold War’, by Pawel Pawlikowski, another captivating and impossible love story that cuts through the historical turmoil of Europe for two decades after World War II. At first glance, the new film by the director of ‘Ida’ also gives off a certain classic aroma. The two main performers, Tomasz Kot as the musician Wiktor and Joanna Kulig as the singer Zula, a couple who fall in love in communist Poland and try to resume their romance in 1950s Paris, give off a photogenic typical of another era. Kot presents the good plant and elegance of a Gary Cooper or a Gregory Peck. Kulig’s ability to bewitch the camera is on par with that of any actress in golden Hollywood … but her attitudes and gestures quickly remind us of some of the key female names in modern cinema, from Monica Vitti to Gena. Rowlands.
