Beautiful Boy

Beautiful Boy “A father is as happy as the most unhappy of his children.” Reading ‘Beautiful Boy,’ the book in which Beautiful Boy journalist David Sheff recounts his son Nic’s addiction (and his own addiction to his son), is a very painful experience with bittersweet conclusions: he talks about paternal love, dependence (not only to drugs, also emotional) and acceptance. Today, March 15, the homonymous film, subtitled with ‘You will always be my son’, which adapts these memoirs, with Timothée Chalamet and Steve Carell as protagonists, hits Spanish cinemas.

We cannot stop recommending both. Especially the personal work, from 2008, and for those who do not dare to pick up the book, the screen version, directed by Felix van Groeningen (‘Alabama Monroe’). We are used to stories in which women give their lives for their children, from films such as’ The Intimate Life of Julia Norris, ‘with Olivia de Havilland, to the highly acclaimed’ Mommy ‘, by Xavier Dolan, or’ Ben is Back ‘, with Julia Roberts. In this scenario, ‘Beautiful Boy’ stands out as the difference: parents also love and suffer, and we also have a lot to learn about family care and mental health. That is the true exceptionality of ‘Beautiful Boy’.
